Before you can order materials for any project, you need the room's square footage. This calculator handles rectangular rooms, L-shapes, and other irregular spaces by letting you break them into sections and add them up.

Scenario: You have an L-shaped room. The main section is 18 ft x 13 ft, and the bump-out for the bay window area is 5 ft x 4 ft.
Result: Main section: 18 x 13 = 234 sq ft. Bump-out: 5 x 4 = 20 sq ft. Total: 254 sq ft.
Break the L-shape into two rectangles. Measure each rectangle's length and width, calculate the area of each (length x width), then add them together.
That depends on the project. For flooring, include any closet you plan to floor. For paint, measure closet walls separately since they add wall area but not floor area. For real estate appraisals, closets are included in the room's square footage as long as the ceiling height meets code.
Divide your square footage by 9. So 180 sq ft / 9 = 20 sq yards.
Exactly 100 square feet. That's a small bedroom or a decent-sized home office.
