Sod gives you a finished lawn in a day instead of weeks of waiting for seed to sprout. This calculator converts your lawn area into pallets or rolls, with a small overage buffer for trimming at edges and obstacles.
Area Dimensions

Length & Width
Scenario: You're sodding a 60 ft x 30 ft backyard. You measured the two sides and have exact dimensions.
Result: Area: 1,800 sq ft. With 5% overage: 1,890 sq ft. That's 5 pallets (at 450 sq ft each) or 189 rolls (at 10 sq ft each).
Total Square Footage
Scenario: You already know your lawn is 2,500 sq ft from a survey or previous measurement.
Result: With 5% overage: 2,625 sq ft. That's 6 pallets (at 450 sq ft each) or 263 rolls (at 10 sq ft each).
Measure your lawn area in square feet (length x width). Add 5% for cutting waste at edges and around obstacles. Divide by 450 for the number of pallets, or by 10 for individual rolls.
450 square feet per pallet, weighing 2,000-3,000 lbs. Each pallet holds about 45 rolls at 10 square feet per roll (2 ft x 5 ft). Make sure your driveway or delivery spot can handle the weight.
Sod is perishable. In cool weather, it lasts 48-72 hours on the pallet. In hot weather, you have 24 hours or less before it starts to yellow and die. Install it the same day it's delivered for best results.
Prepare the soil by removing old grass and weeds, grading the surface, and adding 2-4 inches of topsoil if the existing soil is poor. Lightly compact and moisten the soil before laying sod. Do not put sod over existing grass.
