Before you commit to a flooring material, you need to know the bottom line. This calculator multiplies your room's square footage by the material cost per square foot and adds waste to give you a realistic budget number.

Scenario: You're pricing 200 sq ft of luxury vinyl plank at $4.50 per sq ft with 10% waste.
Result: Material only: 200 x $4.50 = $900. With 10% waste: 220 sq ft x $4.50 = $990. Budget $990 for materials.
Vinyl plank: $2-$7. Laminate: $1-$5. Hardwood: $5-$15. Tile: $1-$15. Carpet: $1-$5. These are material-only costs. Add $2-$6 per sq ft for professional installation, or save by installing yourself.
Multiply your room's square footage by the material price per sq ft. Add 10% for waste. Then add underlayment cost ($0.30-$0.75 per sq ft), adhesive or transition strips, and installation labor if hiring a pro.
DIY saves $2-$6 per sq ft on labor. For a 500 sq ft room, that's $1,000-$3,000 in savings. Floating floors (laminate, LVP) are the easiest DIY options. Tile and hardwood require more skill and specialized tools.
Not necessarily. Very cheap flooring often has thinner wear layers and shorter warranties. Mid-range products ($3-$7 per sq ft for LVP or laminate) offer the best value for most homeowners. Compare wear layer thickness, not just price.
